Hi everyone! I had the opportunity to interview the wonderful author WhatsMyNomDePlume. She is one of my all time favorite authors, and I was so excited when she agreed to let me ask her some questions! I had a blast, and I hope you enjoy reading.... Okay....How did you first discover Twilight? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Well, I was totally unaware of it till the first movie came out and my roommate and I kept hearing about this movie. So we went to see it, and well, I'm shallow and thought Robert Pattinson was pretty. Because of other fandoms, I knew what fanfiction was and I tried to read some, but at that point I hadn't read any of the books. So I actually sort of read the books (rather than waiting for the movies) so I could read the fanfiction lol. Oh wow hahaha Do you remember what your first Twilight Fanfiction was? WhatsMyNomDePlume: I checked my alerts: my first one was a Edward POV of Breaking Dawn called Metamorphosis, which was really good. My first AH was Scotch, Gin and the New Girl. Which explains why I got hooked on fic. Oh, I love SG&TNG. I read that a while back. I can understand why you were hooked :) Did any authors inspire you to write your own, or has this been a previous hobby of yours? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Well, I've written since I can remember. I just always loved to write and read. No particular authors inspired me to write per se, though they do influence me. Arundhati Roy and Harper Lee really influenced me- To Kill a Mockingbird is still my favorite book. It's cliche to say it but I still like Shakespeare-- Macbeth and Othello, I sort of hate Hamlet haha. I actually started off writing poetry so childhood poets like Shel Silverstein were huge in the way I write. And as weird as it sounds, my favorite thing in the world to read is Calvin & Hobbes haha. wow!! I used to read Calvin and Hobbes and Shel Silverstein when I was younger... WhatsMyNomDePlume: I still read C& H :) Thats so cute!! So...Are you in the closet about your Twilight Fic writing? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Yes, very much so. I have one friend who reads my writing, but she's not into Twilight so I changed the names for her lol. Other people know I write, no one else knows I write fanfiction. I'm not embarassed, I just don't think they'd get it, you know? it's like... a whole world lol. Yeah, I understand...a couple of my friends know but I don't tell many because I don't think they would get it either. WhatsMyNomDePlume: I think it's just some people don't get into things and they'd be more likely to scoff. And that'd make me feel bad and maybe not so happy towards them for insulting something that I like doing, so I figure I'll employ don't ask, don't tell in this case. haha yes... I hid it from my best friend for a long time, and one day I just told her. She now only reads twilight fanfiction and quit real books. I was surprised because she normally thinks stuff like this is stupid, but whenever we hang out we just constantly talk about the fics we are reading. I've been lobbying for her to read Legendary. I talk about it all of the time!! haha WhatsMyNomDePlume: haha that's awesome. One of my friends, Derdriu oFaolain, she made one of her guy friends read Legendary. And she said he liked it! I was shocked. Oh that's awesome.....I laugh every time I think about it actually because you have no clue how much I am surrounded by HIMYM references on a daily basis, and the first time I read it, it made me think of Legen-wait for it-dary! hahaha WhatsMyNomDePlume: me too! I had the first chapter written and was sending it to my beta and I had NO idea what to call it. HIMYM was on and Barney said "Legendary" and I was like... well, hmmm. Let's go with that. It wound up fitting really well. HAHAHAHAH Yes it does. So are you reading any books/fics right now that are mentionworthy? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Right now? I just finished Water For Elephants which was really lovely. As for fics, I'm reading most of what other people are: I'm loving With Teeth and Bright Like the Sun is one of my all-time favorites. I've been writing a lot so my reading of fic has suffered. I'm reading a lot of good things but maybe it's because everything is so good or maybe it's the summer slump, but nothing that's like "oh my god why is this so amazing I can't stand it" is coming to mind. Oh, I completely understand....I actually read the last chapter of BLTS first because I opened the link on my cell phone...whoops...and I'm trying to give myself time away from it so I can go back from the beginning. I kind of ruined some of it. I knew it didn't make much sense when I was reading...I thought maybe it was a prologue or something.. lol WhatsMyNomDePlume: haha well it is well worth it. it's not very heavy on the plot-- it's mostly just fabulous dialogue. And I love With Teeth. WhatsMyNomDePlume: yes, yes. it's wonderful :) I am really loving Dead on my Feet right now. WhatsMyNomDePlume: Me too, I like that a lot too. Okay, so for anyone who hasn't read Legendary, can you give us a quick rundown? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Basically, Legendary is a mystery in which Edward Cullen, formerly a rather insignificant, unimpressive young guy, is suddenly and seemingly inexplicably transformed into a sort of Casanova, Don Juan type. Bella is the girl who is just too curious as to not delve more into what exactly caused this change but the explanations she finds aren't all that... normal. So what was your inspiration for the idea of Legendary, and are any of the characters based on anyone you know in real life? WhatsMyNomDePlume: haha you mean is there a real life Legendary Edward walking around? How great would that be? It would be amazing...hahaha WhatsMyNomDePlume: My inspiration for Legendary was really just Edward himself, the character in the books and in the fandom. It really just amazed me how much adoration and awe he commands, whether he's canon or a geekward or domward or whatever. There's just something about him, his name, his character that we as women love. I am absolutely included in that. So I liked playing on that and writing this really charismatic, commanding Edward... who was a complete mystery. And you know what I love the most? Is that I was second guessing myself the whole time. I would be totally positive that he was human...and them bam...you would write something that completely made me doubt myself. WhatsMyNomDePlume: yeah I was really worried about that. Half my notes to my beta were like "Am I giving it all away? Can you guess exactly what has and is going to happen?" I could have sworn in that second to last chapter at the dance when Bella figures out the legends and puts it all together...I was sold.... WhatsMyNomDePlume: It's so unlike me to be able to keep a secret of my own. But no one, not even my beta, knew the ending. I almost went crazy myself. I started reading Legendary when you had posted all but the last chapter and epilogue. I had to wait like two weeks for you to post. WhatsMyNomDePlume: Haha I remember as I was reading the reviews for the last chapter before the epilogue, every single one was like "post it NOW please". Does your Edward have a "ward" name? WhatsMyNomDePlume: You know what? he doesn't. I think people were too busy trying to figure out what he was to get one lol hahahaha He can be 'mysteryward' WhatsMyNomDePlume: haha someone in a review called him "WhatareyouWard" lol hahahahahaha oh...that's great. WhatsMyNomDePlume: that really cracked me up. Also one person hypothesized for the longest time that he was a porn star. So even now, after the ending, she STILL calls him Pornstarward hahaha. hahahaha.....lolol. Do you have any specific writing habits or rituals, and what do you do for writers block? WhatsMyNomDePlume: Oh boy. I don't have any specific habits in order to write but I do need quiet. I can listen to a song to get in the mood, but I can't actually listen while I write. As for writer's block. I usually complain, then whine, to anyone who'll listen. And then I'll ban myself for writing for a period of time, usually about two days. I hate to listen to myself, so invariably the minute I tell myself I can't write, I get inspiration. I have to listen to music when I write. I can't write in quiet haha which...i can owe that to the fact that I am always around my daughter who is a loud fun mess. WhatsMyNomDePlume: awww. she must be so fun. I love kids and babies and kittens and puppies. I'm a total girly girl like that hahah. She is :) She is just starting to run around. She was late with learning how to walk. She is turning into such a girly girl, she plays with my makeup brushes and loves jewelry...and she terrorizes animals, but she thinks she's being sweet with them. WhatsMyNomDePlume: haha so many kids do that She trys to pet our dog and is like almost hitting her its so hard and she just smiles so big...haha. Okay....so besides Legendary, and your other wonderful One-shots...do you have any new ideas, or upcoming multi-chapter fics? WhatsMyNomDePlume: I have a new multi chap out called Once More, With Feeling. it's two chaps in, and it's taking a backseat to my FGB one shots. I've just completed two one shots, one called In Verse & Reverse and the other called Say It, Out Loud And I must ask...How did you get the idea to write a one-shot backwards? And it was great! WhatsMyNomDePlume: thank you! you know one of the prompts was a wedding run out, and I really liked the idea of that but I didn't want it to be like any wedding run out written before, even though with Edward and Bella and me, they're always going to end up together. so I thought what if the ending, which everyone knows will be HEA, came first I actually can't read other pairings besides E/B. I was surprised I read Legendary because of your warning at the beginning about the other pairings...and with In Verse and Reverse you still managed the plot to be a twist even with the ending shown first.... WhatsMyNomDePlume: yeah I sort of get obsessed with writing twisty plots and then I calm myself down because I don't want to be the M Night Shymalan of fics. all twist, no plot haha And on Legendary, I put the warning just because there was mention of Edward with other people Thank you so much!! WhatsMyNomDePlume: thanks so much for interviewing me! and always being so wonderful and supportive of my stuff :) Thank you SOOO much for letting me. I'm grinning super huge right now. |
